History of Stamps

Our modern postal service developed from couriers kept by medieval kings to deliver documents safely. Henry VIII established a Master of the Posts and later, posts were opened to the public in 1635. Soon, postage rates were fixed, the postmark was invented to detect delays, and by 1661 the first date stamp was used.

By 1700, the service was still based on routes set up in Tudor times, with all mail going via London, leading to long delivery times, but eventually by 1784, the Post Office had transformed the network, with fast, well-guarded mail coaches. Growing Northern towns got special attention, and in 1793, uniformed postman appeared.

Before, 1840, postage was charged by distance and the number of sheets. Rowland Hill introduced the Penny Black, the first adhesive stamp, which the sender paid, so that postman no longer needed to collect payment.

The Victorian era saw a huge increase in letter writing, and envelopes became popular. The first pillar box appeared in 1852, and in 1880 postmen first used bicycles.
