Postcards
First issued in the late 1890s, picture postcards offer a fascinating insight into social and industrial history, often celebrating ordinary life as well as recording famous scenes and notable events. Deltiologists, or postcard collectors, regard the pre-1919 era as The Golden Age of postcards, and the sheer range of subject matter offers endless scope for worthwhile collecting. Real photographic and topographic picture postcards from the late Victorian era to the start of the Second World War tend to be the most sought-after.
Early examples
Before the advent of picture postcards, the Post Office issued un-illustrated postal stationery cards used by businesses to advertise their products and services, often with specially commissione illustrations. Foreign cards, especially from less developed countries, and cards featuring the work of Art Nouveau and Art Deco artists command interest.
Specialist advice
Understanding the factors influencing a card or collection's worth is a specialist area. This can depend on the subject matter, the publisher, photographer or artist, and the country of origin. Equally important is the age and rarity, as well as the demand. The condition, plus stamps and postmarks can all help increase the value, and if the card carries a message of historical importance or a famous signature, then demand will increase.
Popular choices
Even though most postcard collectors tend to specialise, some general topics will always be popular and attract interest at auction. Transport is such an area, with trains and shipping, particularly The Titanic, always in demand. Street scenes and social history are other sought after subjects.
