Company History
T&T Auction House has a rich history that dates back to 1927 when it was originally established as The Stamp Shop in Station Approach, Royal Tunbridge Wells. This vibrant retail outlet quickly became a beloved destination for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
In the 1960s, Doug Read took the helm, relocating the shop to The Pantiles, where it continued to thrive and build a loyal customer base. Under Doug’s leadership, The Stamp Shop solidified its reputation within the community.
The 1990s brought a significant change when Mr. Pritchard took over the business and moved it to Castle Street. During this period, the auction component was introduced, marking a new chapter in the company’s evolution. This move allowed the business to expand its offerings and engage with a broader audience.
James Cook joined the company as an apprentice and worked diligently, eventually rising to the roles of Manager of the shop and the Auction House. In 2011, he became the owner, leading the company into a new era of growth and innovation. Under James's guidance, T&T Auction House has established itself as one of the leading specialised auction houses in the UK, focusing on stamps, coins, cigarette cards, medals, and postcards.
In recent years, we expanded our capabilities by acquiring Mayfair Philatelic Auctions in 2023. This acquisition enhanced our expertise and allowed us to offer even more specialised services. Today, we aim to host a minimum of eight specialist sales annually, alongside private treaty, insurance, and probate services.
Our current facility at New Barn in Eridge, Tunbridge Wells, reflects our commitment to providing a comprehensive and welcoming experience for our clients. With in-house specialist valuers and describers, a graphic design team, dedicated viewing galleries, client valuation rooms, and convenient parking, we continue to honour our legacy while embracing the future of collecting and auction services.
We are proud to be official trade members of the British Numismatic Trade Association (BNTA), the Association of Dealers in Philatelic Stamps (ADPS), the Philatelic Traders’ Society (PTS), and the Postcard Traders’ Association (PTA) and James is a member of The Royal Philatelic Society. These affiliations underscore our commitment to professionalism and excellence in the auction and collecting community.
