GREAT BRITAIN - POSTAL HISTORY
A cover sent locally in London May 22nd 1900, the 1d postage paid with the two Jubilee issue halfpenny values, SG179 and 213.However the sender cut out the centre with QV's head and transposed it to the other value thus changing the colour of the head plates in each case. This change was noticed by Post Office with a manuscript 'Contrary to Regulations Defaced Stamps'. Initially a surcharge of 2d was marked in manuscript on the envelope but then struck through and a 1d surcharge written presumably because the correct postage had been affixed but as the stamps were defaced a surcharge was raised. Very unusual item
